When the upgrade to the Ethereum network was announced, it was to be expected that scammers would create related phishing emails to try to trick people into compromising their crypto wallets and/or exposing their personal information.
Well, they certainly didn’t disappoint! Read on to learn about the new MetaMask Ethereum upgrade phishing emails that many people have been receiving, as well as what you can do to avoid getting scammed.
These recent MetaMask Ethereum update scam emails are hoping to trick people into thinking that their wallet failed to complete the Ethereum update and that they need to resolve the issue by updating it manually.
Of course, it’s all nonsense — the scammers are just hoping people click on the phishing links included in the messages because the websites they lead to are malicious and capable of stealing peoples’ crypto wallet information and personal information.
MetaMask Ethereum upgrade scam examples
Below are two examples of this ongoing scam.
At first glance, both examples look fairly convincing. They’ve got all the expected logos and the formatting looks good. However, there are a few giveaways that they’re scams:
· “Metamask” is incorrectly capitalized. It should be “MetaMask”.
· Some strange wordings/missing punctuation — “Your wallet have failed to complete the new Ethereum update Due to the…”.
· The senders’ email addresses are both highly suspicious.
· The use of urgent language. Both emails tell people if they don’t follow the instructions, they will lose their assets. They both impose a deadline, too.
If you come across the same scam email or one similar, do not interact with it in any way. Simply delete it from your inbox.
