That is until you fall victim to one of their clever scams! Today we'll be discussing how these bad actors take advantage of Letterboxd's popularity and all of the ways that you can protect yourself from getting ripped off. Letterboxd scams are becoming increasingly common, so it’s important to be aware of them. These scams usually involve email phishing scams sent to users claiming they have subscribed to the platform and if not, they provide a link to "Unsubscribe".
The only problem is, this is not legit and if users click the link, they’ll be redirected to a website that looks just like Letterboxd but is actually run by scammers. Once on their site, users will be asked to enter their login credentials and other personal information.
In some emails, it reads that you have £49 subscription and a 14-day trial from your PayPal accounts. In the midst of panic, they cleverly include a link to "Cancel Your Subscription". Once you click on the link, they are able to use your personal information and even debit money from PayPal.
The thing about phishing scams is that they can be hard to spot, so it's important to remember that you should never click on links in emails that seem suspicious or unfamiliar.
If you receive the alleged email from Letterboxd, DO NOT CLICK on the link provided. Instead, if you haven't subscribed to the platform, ignore the email and do not sign into the platform with your login credentials.
If you are a Letterboxd user, make sure to update your password frequently and always log out of the website after each session. Additionally, use two-factor authentication whenever available to add an extra layer of security.
Finally, if you think you have been compromised, log in to your PayPal account and check recent transactions.
