Facebook is perhaps the home of fake accounts. They exist by the thousands, if not by the tens of thousands. Fake Facebook accounts are the scammers' preferred means of pulling off fraudulent schemes in romance scams, investment scams, online shopping scams among others.
It is always a smart move to check that a Facebook profile is legit before interacting with it. Read our guide ‘How to Spot a Fake Social Media Profile’ for tips on how to identify one.
There are two kinds of Facebook accounts you should report:
If such accounts are found to violate Facebook Community Standards, then they may be suspended.
You can report a fake Facebook profile by following these steps:
3. You will see a list of options. Select the one that best describes the problem you want to report.
In our case, it is the first option: “Pretending to be someone.” Click it.
4. Select who they are pretending to be in the options that appear. If they are impersonating you, then select that. Or if it’s a celebrity or a friend of yours, then select that.
5. If the account is impersonating a celebrity, type in their name in the box that appears below, then click send.
6. You will need to check the Community Standards first before submitting the report. If you are unfamiliar with it, then it may be a good idea to have a look at those standards first.
Only Accounts that violate Facebook Community Standards get suspended temporarily or closed.
7. Once you are sure of the violation, click submit. There, your report is filed!
There you go, it’s pretty straight-forward.
