Facebook Messenger users are being advised to ignore a four-word phishing message that is currently making the rounds. Scammers, posing as a Facebook friend, are sending messages with the words “look what i found” accompanied by a laughing face emoji.
What they’ve ‘found’ is a malicious phishing link — the aim being to get the would-be victim to click it. The link will take the user to a fake site where they will be asked to enter their Facebook log-in details. This will enable the scammer to steal personal information and/or install malware on the victim’s phone or computer.
This scam — and variations of it — has actually been around for years, but a recent surge has been noted. Another type to look out for is the “is this you in this video?” message. Things to look out for include: the lack of a greeting, sloppy grammar, and a gibberish URL.
